Featuring Jean-Louis Trintignant and a cast of A-list riff-raff, Z is a modern day political thriller that hits the mark. Although it may have had the honours of being the highest budgeted film of its ilk, its swagger was tempered by the occasional troll and the requisite sex. The film was the brainchild of a former slacker turned filmmaker and it was his first feature that he was allowed to write. In addition to the aforementioned main course, the film was the recipient of the Golden Globe award for best feature film in 2006. This accolade was a major boost to his already soaring ego and he went on to direct a string of critically acclaimed masterpieces.
Z was one of a handful of films that spawned a generation of aspiring Hollywood stars. Other noteworthy entries included the incomparable Irene Papas, whose name may be familiar to some of her kin, and the ubiquitous Jean-Louis Trintignant. Not to be outdone, a slew of notable guest stars included Jacques Perrin and Yves Montand. The aforementioned heists were accompanied by a small army of shady characters, who had a penchant for the oddball. Despite its plethora of flaws, the movie was nonetheless a box office success.
