Known as one of the world's most popular building toys, LEGO bricks have been around for decades. These colorful plastic pieces have been used to build buildings, vehicles, and robots. Kids who play with these toys learn about geometry, shape, and symmetry.
The Lego Group was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen (1891-1958) in Billund, Denmark. He first began making wooden toys for his children.
In 1947, the company expanded into plastic toys. By 1951, plastic toys accounted for half of the company's output. The group opened a factory and packing and assembly plant in Switzerland.
The LEGO Group experienced rapid growth in the 1960s. The company expanded into the female market, dollhouses, and transportation possibilities.
In 1974, the first LEGO minifigure was introduced. The smiling, posable LEGO citizen was used in many different types of LEGO sets. He was also populated with a variety of skin colors.
In the 1970s, the company expanded into the world of transportation with the introduction of a ship set. The addition of floating hull pieces and electrical lights added realism to the LEGO creations.
In 1982, the Technic series was launched. These sets were based on a programmable LEGO brick developed at MIT Media Lab. The line has continued to evolve and expand.
In 1999, the company introduced the Mindstorms robotics line. These programmable robots were made possible through a partnership with MIT.
The LEGO Group also operates a number of LEGO retail stores across the United States, Europe, and Canada. In addition, they have a franchised store in Abu Dhabi.
