Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the Air Jordan 4 was Michael Jordan's fourth signature shoe. In addition to the Air Max cushioning unit on the sole, the Air Jordan 4 also featured a multiport lacing system that offered a superior fit. The shoe also featured a streamlined silhouette. It was a lightweight shoe, and was the first in the Air Jordan line to feature an over-molded mesh.
The urethane-coated mesh was used to make the shoe more breathable. The shoe also featured a visible air unit on the heel, and the tongue featured the Flight script. The heel tab had straps around the eyelets that added support. The shoe also had 18 different lacing options. The straps resembled "wings" on the sides of the shoe when laced loosely.
The shoe was released in several colors, including Black Cement, White Cement, Military Blue, and Fire Red. These colorways were worn by Michael Jordan during the 1989 NBA season. The Air Jordan IVs also caught the attention of rappers, including Wale, who rapped about wearing the shoes on tour.
In addition to the traditional colorways, the Air Jordan 4 also came in an 'LS' (Lifestyle) model. The LS models also featured leather panels over the netting. This allowed for a custom fit. The 'LS' also had a Jumpman logo on the heel.
In addition to the retro versions of the Air Jordan 4, the Jordan brand released the 'Thunder and Lightning' pack in 2006. This set of four shoes was released in black and yellow.
