Sbarro was started by Gennaro and Carmela Sbarro in 1956. They were immigrants from Naples, Italy. They opened their first store in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. They later expanded their shop into a franchise.

Today, Sbarro is a popular chain that is known for its large, jumbo New York-style slice. It has over 1,000 locations throughout the U.S., with a majority of them located in malls.

The company is owned by Apollo Global Management and Guggenheim Investments. It has more than 300 international locations and is headquartered in Ohio.

Aside from its pizzas and pies, Sbarro serves salads, stromboli and pasta dishes. They have a menu of custom pizza pies, as well as custom vegan and vegetarian options.

They have also debuted a fast-casual concept, called Cucinova, which targets millennials. The restaurant's signature salads include the Greek, which is made with romaine lettuce, Kalamata olives, cucumbers, tomatoes and Sbarro's signature Greek dressing. It is served with breadsticks or as an entree.

Sbarro is currently in the process of rebranding and restructuring its stores. It plans to open more non-mall locations, as well as expand into convenience stores, gas stations and travel plazas.

If you're in the mood for a cheesy, traditional pizza, you can't go wrong with the pepperoni pizza. It's topped with a blend of mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. If you're more of a veggie, try the Roman veggie pizza. It's topped with roasted vegetables and Parmesan cheese.
